Impact glazing is laminated by definition, and lamination is the single most effective thing you can do to a window for sound. Every Fortwell system therefore starts from a better acoustic baseline than a comparable non-impact assembly, before any acoustic-specific glass is specified.

What STC means at the window

Sound Transmission Class summarises how much airborne noise an assembly blocks. A single-glazed window sits around STC 27. Fortwell systems run STC 31 to 41 depending on system and glass. Each 10-point increase is heard as roughly half the loudness.

Where it changes the brief

Airport approach paths, arterial roads, entertainment districts and dense urban infill are the sites where acoustic glass earns its cost. On a quiet coastal lot the standard impact laminate is usually already enough.

Specifying for sound

Asymmetric lite thicknesses and a thicker acoustic interlayer break up the resonant frequency of the unit. The operable type matters too: a compression-sealed casement outperforms a sliding sash of the same glass, because a slider seals by brush rather than compression.
